Root Canal Treatment in Bella Vista

Signs you may need root canal therapy

A badly decayed tooth can lead to infection and, if left untreated, even tooth loss. Root canal therapy is a routine procedure that can save your natural tooth. At Lexington Dental, we use the latest dental technology to provide a comfortable experience.

Here are a few signs that may indicate you need root canal therapy:

  • A visible hole or crack in your tooth
  • Significant tooth pain that doesn’t go away
  • Swelling around your cheeks and neck
  • An abscess on your gum (can look like a little pimple)
  • Tooth discolouration

Sometimes an infected tooth won’t give you any warning signs at all, so it’s important that you maintain regular dental check-ups. This gives your dentist the chance to pick up on early signs and ensure you get the treatment you need without delay. Don’t ignore the signs. Come into our Bella Vista clinic to get it checked out. Your best chance of saving your tooth is by acting quickly.

What happens during a root canal treatment?

If you have a badly infected tooth your dentist may recommend a root canal treatment. This infection is usually caused by advanced tooth decay which may have begun as a cavity or little crack in your tooth.

While the procedure for getting root canal therapy may vary slightly from one patient to another, you can general expect it to look a little something like this:

  1. Your tooth and surrounding area are numbed with local anaesthetic.
  2. Your dentist uses a special tool to clean out the infected nerve.
  3. The inside of your tooth is thoroughly disinfected, this is done to minimise the risk of reinfection. Depending on the size of infection, sometimes this appointment needs to be completed one or two more additional times.
  4. Your tooth canal is filled with a special rubber substance called
gutta-percha which prevents more bacteria from entering.
  5. If you require it, a crown is placed to finish off the treatment and to offer further structure and support to your tooth.

Some patients feel anxious at the thought of a root canal treatment, but with modern dentistry, it should be no more uncomfortable than a filling.

Appointments at Lexington Dental are never rushed. We allow a full hour for our appointments to take the time to get to know you and listen to your concerns. This is just one of the ways we give you the care you deserve.

We also know you’re busy though. So, if you need to just drop in and drop out for a quick lunch break check-up, don’t worry – we’ve got you covered!

Root canal treatment aftercare

A root canal treatment can sometimes be performed in a single dental appointment. Following the procedure your mouth may remain numb for a few hours. You need to be wary of chewing the insides of your cheeks and lips while you wait for the anaesthetic to wear off. You may feel a little sensitivity or discomfort for the first 24 to 48 hours. This is normal and can be managed with over the counter pain relievers.

We recommend that you avoid hard or chewy foods for the first 24 to 48 hours, just to give your mouth a chance to settle. After a few days your routine should be able to return to normal.
